Packing Your Boxes – Start early & pack a couple of boxes each day!
- Ensure the base of your box is firmly secured by adding three strips of tape to hold the flaps together and for extra protection, place two perpendicular to the seam.
- Line the bottom of the box with white, clean newsprint or blankets/towels to provide a cushioning layer.
- Stuff the box to the brim, then seal it and mark the contents on both sides, but avoid labeling the top for easy visibility when stacked. If the box’s top sinks more than an inch when pressed, add a blanket or towel to support it. If the box compresses during packing, it may become damaged during transportation.
- Pack each room’s contents separately.
- Label the box with the room it belongs to and a brief description of its contents (for example, “Living Room Books” or “Kitchen Dishes”). If the box contains fragile items, indicate this by writing “fragile” on the box or using special fragile tape from the dollar store to secure it.
- Do not pack jewelry, valuables, money, or important documents in boxes. If these items can be moved by you, do so; they cannot be replaced.
- When packing dishes, arrange them on their edges, use a lot of paper to cushion them, ensure there are at least three pieces of paper between each dish, and wrap three or four in a bundle. Glassware and stemware should be individually wrapped and placed upright in the box.
- It’s crucial to label your boxes with the room they originate from and a general description of their contents (for instance, “Living Room Books” or “Kitchen Dishes”). If the box is fragile, mark it as such or use special fragile tape from the dollar store to secure it. Remember to label on both sides for easy visibility when boxes are stacked.
- Consider numbering your boxes (1, 2, 3 or A, B, C) based on their priority for unpacking. This way, you can prioritize unpacking the boxes numbered 3 or C last.
- Start packing well in advance of your move date. If you haven’t used an item in a while, you might not need it. Consider donating these items to a non-profit, such as a church, or to Move for Hunger for food donations. There are numerous organizations in need of donated items.
- Use the appropriate box for the items you’re packing. For example, dishes and glassware should be packed in a stronger, more secure container like a barrel or dish pack. Heavier items, such as books and tools, can be packed in smaller boxes known as small or book boxes, which are available in standard and heavy-duty options at big box stores. Lighter and bulkier items can be packed in larger boxes known as medium boxes. There are also specific boxes for clothing, such as wardrobes, and for items like pictures and mirrors. Mattress bags and TV boxes are also available.
- Be ready on moveday. Have a time line and stick to it.
