Cross-border planning through GCVL
Canada–U.S. long-distance moving
Moving between Canada and the United States? Start with both addresses, your intended loading date and a clear inventory. Take A Load Off Moving helps arrange applicable cross-border bookings through Great Canadian Van Lines.
Book with Take A Load Off Moving. Cross-border transportation coordinated through the Great Canadian Van Lines network.
A move planned around both ends of the journey.
Plan the shipment and your travel together
A cross-border household move has two schedules: your own travel and the transportation of your goods. Tell us when you will leave, when you can take possession and who can receive the shipment. A delivery window should be reviewed before you arrange building access or depend on a particular day.
Great Canadian Van Lines advertises moving between Canadian provinces and U.S. states. Share the Canadian and U.S. communities to confirm the applicable service, carrier and dates. Take A Load Off Moving is listed as a GCVL agent; our team coordinates the booking through the GCVL network for your actual origin and destination.
Prepare the information the carrier needs
- Full pickup and destination addresses, including postal or ZIP codes.
- The direction of travel and your preferred loading date.
- A household inventory and photos of specialty items.
- Elevators, stairs, loading bays and truck access at both properties.
- Possession date, destination contact and any storage gap.
Discuss required shipment documents directly with the carrier. Requirements depend on the direction of travel and your circumstances. Your personal entry or immigration arrangements are separate from the transport booking.
Start with the right border guidance
Moving or returning to Canada
The Canada Border Services Agency provides a guide for people moving or returning to Canada. It explains preparing records for goods accompanying you and goods to follow. Review it alongside the carrier’s shipment checklist; requirements depend on your circumstances.
Moving from Canada to the U.S.
GCVL’s Canada-to-U.S. guide explains its cross-border service and links to U.S. Customs and Border Protection Form 3299 for unaccompanied articles. Ask the selected carrier which documents and supporting information apply before loading.
Keep your personal-entry documents with you. Your household shipment, your own border crossing and any goods arriving later need coordinated preparation.
Check household goods before packing
Ask the carrier for its current restricted-item and document checklists. Food, plants, hazardous goods and other controlled items need particular attention. Do not assume something accepted on a domestic move can be loaded for a cross-border shipment.
Keep passports, medication, essential paperwork, keys and valuables with you. Ask how the inventory should identify owner-packed boxes, fragile goods and high-value pieces, and confirm any special packing before collection.
Confirm the complete estimate
Review the carrier, pricing basis, included loading and delivery work, packing, storage, access arrangements and any additional handling. Ask how border-related delays affect the delivery plan and how any change in scope or cost is communicated and approved.
Shipment protection or valuation, exclusions and claims procedures belong in the written service agreement. Confirm payment terms and do not treat an initial request as a reserved date.
Common cross-border questions
Can I request a U.S.-to-Canada move?
Yes. Tell us the U.S. origin and Canadian destination so the team can review the applicable GCVL arrangement. Availability, documents and service scope are confirmed for that direction of travel.
Can you give me a customs-document checklist?
Ask the selected carrier for the checklist that applies to your direction of travel and circumstances. Use official border-agency information for personal-entry requirements. Do not rely on another customer’s paperwork as a complete checklist.
What if my destination is not ready?
Mention the storage gap before booking. Confirm the location, handling, access and final delivery arrangements in the estimate, along with any effect on the transport schedule.
Is there a fixed cross-border transit time?
No single timeline fits every shipment. The route, carrier schedule, border processing, crossings and property access all matter. Confirm an expected delivery window and the process for updates.
Start with your route
Where are you moving?
Tell us your pickup and destination communities, preferred loading date, home size, and any packing or storage needs.
- Both addresses and postal codes, if available.
- Inventory, photos and any heavy or fragile items.
- Stairs, elevators, parking and truck access.
- Possession dates and any gap before delivery.
Use the move-details box to describe your route. Sending a request starts a conversation; it does not reserve a date or confirm a price.
