A practical storage guide

Choose space that fits your move.

The right choice depends on what you are storing, how often you need it and who is doing the moving. Here is what to compare before you book.

Start with access, not just size.

Are you putting furniture away until your new home is ready, or collecting tools and stock throughout the week? Those are different storage needs. Write down what you expect to retrieve, how often and whether you need help loading it.

Do not assume every storage service includes an individual unit, drive-up access or visits whenever you like. Confirm the actual arrangement with the provider before moving your belongings in.

Moving-company storage

Worth considering when you want help coordinating pickup, handling and later delivery, especially between possession dates or during a renovation. Ask what is included, how retrieval works and how much notice is needed.

A self-storage rental

Worth comparing when your priority is managing your own loading and regular visits. Check the specific facility’s access hours, unit layout, vehicle access, rental terms and any restrictions. Services vary; the label alone does not tell you what is included.

Compare the whole cost.

A storage rate is only one part of the decision. Compare quotes using the same items, dates and services. A lower storage charge may not be the lower total once moving and handling are considered.

  • Space and billing: what quantity or space is being charged for, and what billing period applies?
  • Getting in and out: are pickup, unloading, retrieval, loading and redelivery included or separate?
  • Changes: what happens if your dates move or you need to collect only some items?
  • Other charges and terms: ask about applicable taxes, deposits, supplies, protection options and any minimum or notice requirements.

Ask for unclear items to be explained before agreeing. Do not compare a storage-only figure with a moving-and-storage package as though they cover the same work.

Make an inventory before asking for space.

HOUSEHOLD

Furniture and boxes

List the larger pieces, approximate box count and anything unusually heavy, fragile or oversized. Note the pickup access, stairs or elevator arrangements if moving help is needed.

BUSINESS

Goods and pallets

Record pallet or piece count, dimensions, weight, stacking limits and handling needs. Share the expected carrier and arrival date before arranging a freight delivery.

PARKING

Vehicles and trailers

Provide the vehicle type, overall length and planned dates. Confirm suitability, access and the receiving location before driving or towing it to storage.

Prepare for the day your goods arrive.

Keep the items you will need soon separate from the main load. Label boxes clearly and keep your own inventory so you can identify a particular box without opening everything. Discuss any packing or protection you are unsure about before intake.

Tell the provider about anything temperature-sensitive, unusually valuable or requiring special handling. Ask what may not be accepted and confirm the applicable protection terms. Do not treat the words indoor, heated and climate-controlled as interchangeable promises.

Plan collection before you need it.

When storage is part of a move, share your likely possession or delivery date early. Confirm how to update the plan, how much notice is needed and whether partial collection requires a separate arrangement. Keep access instructions and your inventory with your booking information.

For a business shipment, confirm the receiving location and appointment before the carrier leaves. Review the Nanaimo warehousing and freight-receiving requirements when requesting a commercial arrangement.
